In December 2007, Joy Engelman's painting "This Sacred Place, a triptych of panels depicting the western deserts of NSW was awarded fifth place for paintings at the Biennale Internazionale dell'Arte Contemporanea in Firenze, Italy. The Florence Biennale is the largest democratic artist supported biennale in the world with over 2500 artworks from 840 artists from over 170 countries. It is by all accounts an extraordinary event.
